BECOMING INDEPENDENT JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Driver B
PROGRAM: Transportation
POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for safely transporting people to and from home and day program sites and community activities in a variety of vehicles.
SUPERVISES: N/A
SALARY: $16.50/hour (with longevity increases)
STATUS: Non-exempt
CRITICAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Possesses the professional skills and abilities specific to the technical aspects of the position:
PROVIDE SUPPORTS
- Support passengers in safely entering/exiting vehicles as needed.
- Assists non-ambulatory individuals with placement and safety of wheelchairs and other ambulation aids in vehicles.
- Assist passengers as needed, encouraging good passenger etiquette and safety.
VEHICLE/DRIVING EXPECTATIONS AND DOCUMENTATION
- Safely and legally operate vehicles according to specified route and time schedule.
- Perform and maintain daily records of specified safety and maintenance inspections.
- Maintain mileage, gas, time and work records as directed.
- Promptly report vehicle repair needs to Transportation Manager.
- Maintain records and submit accurate reports as required by BI transportation and/or other related agencies.
- Ensure inspection and cleanliness of the vehicle before/after each use.
DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with persons served, peers, supervisors and other staff, affiliated agency staff, and members of the community.
- Attend, actively engage, and participate in weekly staff meetings, training sessions, and other relevant meetings.
OTHER
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or valid medical or religious exemption is required as a condition for employment. Individuals who are in the vaccination process ie; are only partially vaccinated/have only received the first dose in a two dose series or are awaiting the 14 day post vaccine waiting period for full vaccination status, must be fully vaccinated prior to beginning employment at BI. Individuals with a valid medical or religious exemption must undergo a weekly COVID-19 testing.
- Provide support as a Direct Support Professional working in any BI program including but not limited to, providing in-home care, transportation and in-community services for persons served.
- Executes position specific job duties and other duties as assigned at the discretion of BI.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required.
CREDENTIALS/LICENSES: Class B State of California driver's license with clean driving record.
EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities is desirable. Good customer service skills and an interest in helping others pursue and achieve their best life is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A physical condition that will permit frequent bending, turning, and lifting without injury
- Ability to operate a vehicle for the majority of shift
- Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods
- Ability to assist individuals in wheelchairs
- Lift at least 40 pounds
- Clearance of pre-employment Functional Capacity Evaluation with no restrictions that cannot be reasonably accommodated without undue hardship
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- California Special Driving (VDDP) Certificate
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or valid medical or religious exemption
- Insured, dependable vehicle
- Drug testing (Class B Dept. of Transportation guidelines)
- Criminal Record Clearance
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Successful completion of driver safety/evaluation course
- First aid and CPR certification
